A Book Review - "Wired for Sound"
I recently finished reading Wired for Sound: a journey into hearing by Beverly Biderman. Beverly writes about her personal experiences as a person with severe to profound hearing loss who chooses to pursue receiving a cochlear implant when it becomes available to her. An excellent author, she also writes beyond her own experience and eloquently shares information about deaf issues as well as technical issues regarding hearing with cochlear implants. Some of the technical information is becoming outdated as this book was written over ten years ago, but as a history of the development of cochlear implants most of the information still applies. This is a very good book that covers a lot of territory regarding deafness and regaining sound. I recommend this book for anyone contemplating getting a cochlear implant.

Thank you Sarah. Yes, that is my grandson. I got him and his brother wound up with the "I'm gonna get you..." game and then I chased them around with my camera in hand. I love that shot and I can almost hear him giggle when I look at it.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure you will enjoy "Wired for Sound" because she writes about more than only the cochlear implant experience.
Great technique for catching that photo! I will have to remember that. :)

Hi Glenice,
ReplyDeleteThanks for the book recommendation. I have a similar history to yours, but my hearing isn't quite bad enough for a CI. I was tested last summer and missed it by 3% on the left side because my HINT Sentence testing was too good by 3%. BUT-- they are experimenting with a less invasive cochlear implant with a shorter electrode that is supposed to preserve your low tones, and I qualified for that. However, my ins. wouldn't pay since it isn't FDA approved. Since then I've gotten new hearing aids and I'm hearing better, but I'm pretty sure it's just a matter of time before these Naidas don't help anymore. I have been losing my hearing since I was 19 and I'm 52 now. (sigh). It helps to read about others who have had much success with their CI's. Gives me hope. :-)
